Right now, many of us are staying close to home which makes mobile deposit handy for everyone. And with the extra time at home, it really is possible to set a budget using our Money Management tools. You can check on your credit score, decide who you want to include on your accounts, and set up alerts for every transaction over 1¢. How cool is all that? Check out the features that are sure to be your favorites.

  1. Mobile Deposit
    This convenient way to deposit a check lets you check off “go make a deposit at the bank” from your to-do list! It is as easy as taking a photo with your smart phone. Simply follow the prompts and you’ll be amazed at how easy it is! To get started with this feature, click on “Check Deposit” in the main menu.
  2. CreditStory
    You have instant access to everything you need to know about your credit, when you want it, all in one place. The best part? It’s free! This feature allows you to receive daily credit alerts for major changes, view your credit score as often as you’d like, access your credit report, identify credit bureau errors, better understand the factors that impact your score, and enjoy financial tips to improve your score. CreditStory soft pulls your credit history, so it doesn’t affect your overall score no matter how often you check it. Start using CreditStory by clicking the “More” option on your app menu. Choose “Credit Story” and you’re on your way!
  3. Budgeting
    Creating a budget couldn’t be easier! Our Budgeting tool allows you to add accounts from other financial institutions to help you paint a better financial picture. You can view your transactions, spending habits and trends, manage your debts, view your net worth, set goals and create and manage budgets. To start creating a budget that is worth sticking to, click on the “More” option of your app menu. Choose “Money Management” and follow the prompts to begin creating a budget.

  4. Shared Access
    This feature is excellent for customers who want to provide family members, accountants or other trusted third parties the ability to help them with their finances. Leveraging the Shared Access feature, you can provide easy and secure access to some, or to all your Stockman accounts, without having to provide your confidential login information. You will have total control to provide these trusted advisors with as much, or as little ability you desire to conduct business on your behalf. To activate this feature, log into your account through your browser. Select “More Options” and choose “Share Access with Others.”
  5. Alerts
    Set up alerts to help you know when a deposit and/or a withdrawal takes place in your accounts. It’s easy to do and the parameters you set can be whatever fits your lifestyle best! Alerts can be set on transactions as small as $0.01! You can also receive alerts on balance updates and low balances. To begin creating Alerts, go to “More” on the main menu. Click “Settings”, then select “Push Notifications”. Start customizing!

Focus on Small Business – Hotel Finlen

Anyone who has the smallest bit of interest in history can easily fall in love with the mining city of Butte, The Hotel Finlen, located on Broadway Street in uptown has its own history-rich story to tell. In 1924, the 9-story hotel with 250 rooms opened its doors. It was designed in a similar style to the Hotel Astor in New York City and has been a center of commerce and culture ever since.

In the 1950s, a motor inn was added to the complex and today, the Hotel Finlen is one of the most unique and interesting historic hotels in the second largest Historic Landmark District in the country. It has been regarded as one of the grandest hotels in the region and hosted notable figures and dignitaries including John F Kennedy, Thomas Edison, Richard Nixon, and Charles Lindbergh.

In 2018, the Hotel was purchased by a group with expertise in hospitality and real estate. Over the years the property was adapted to include apartments and office space. According to JJ Adams, one of the Finlen’s owners, owning the Finlen was the chance for a great business opportunity and a great building in a great town. Since taking over ownership they have more than doubled the number of events hosted at the hotel and grown the lodging business.

The group has made many improvements to the hotel including adding a 50 kilowatt solar array which offsets 20% of the buildings power consumption, adding new beds and bedding and improving all sorts of other amenities.

For beer enthusiasts they added what Adams called the “Smooth Hopperator” in the hotels Cavalier Lounge. The Hopperator can infuse ordinary beer with distinctive flavors, and they have enjoyed experimenting with things like Madagascar vanilla beans and cream ale, fresh hops, licorice, pomegranate seeds, strawberries and cream ale and basil and lemon. The Hopperator is the only one of its’ kind in the United States.

Currently the Cavaliar Lounge is open to the public on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and the hotel is taking reservations on a limited basis to ensure the safety of its’ guests.

Moving Montana Forward

The first half of 2020 is over. What a year it has been so far! No one could have predicted the events of the past six months and it’s uncertain what the next six months will bring.

What is clear is that we need to keep moving forward, one step at a time. A good place to start is supporting local business. When we help our local businesses move forward, we move our communities forward, which then moves Montana forward.

Across the US, I’m predicting a quarter of all businesses in the country will be lost to the COVID -related economic crisis. These losses will occur over the next year or so. Montanans are hardworking, resilient and take care of one another, so I’m predicting we will not lose that many businesses. However, one small business lost in Montana is too many!

So what should businesses be doing right now to move forward through this crisis? I have participated in numerous meetings, discussions and media interviews over the past few months and am often asked this very question.

Here is my answer:

  1. First and foremost, don’t just automatically run out and borrow as much as you can. The State of Montana, US Small Business Administration and other agencies have some helpful programs. However, it may not be best for your situation to borrow the maximum from each eligible program. Make sure you understanding the parameters (eligibility, payback/forgiveness, reporting/monitoring, etc.) and your anticipated use of the funds.
  2. Give serious thought, with realistic expectations, to how long it will take you to get back to pre-COVID levels. I believe it will take most small businesses 12-18 months to get back to these levels. Some will never get back to these levels.
  3. Do strategic planning about your business needs. Don’t just go back to what you were previously doing. Plan how your business will operate during this restart period and then the next phase after restart. You will need to scale your business, plan your budget, inventory, work force, and other aspects accordingly. Unfortunately, it is not, and will not, just be business as usual. Many business models will be permanently changed.
  4. After this thorough soul searching, planning and projecting, contact your banker to discuss the available options. Focus on your specific needs and what you anticipate the future holds.
